Lightweight Construction Innovations: Less Weight, More Efficiency
In the field of lightweight construction, we are showcasing three groundbreaking technologies:
PulPro-SMC – Bonded Joining of Fiber-Reinforced Composite Structures
This process bonds fiber-reinforced composite structures in a single pressing operation—without the need for separate joining technology.
- 20% weight reduction compared to conventional steel construction
- Material-bonded connection without welding, gluing, or screwing
- Fire protection certified to HL2 R1
LeiPo-3D-FKM – Standardized design of additively manufactured metal components
For the first time, this methodology enables the standard-compliant design of 3D-printed metal components in accordance with the FKM guideline—a milestone for the use of additive manufacturing in lightweight construction.
- First FKM qualification for additively manufactured steel alloys
- Consideration of all relevant AM influencing factors
- Validation using real-world technology demonstrators in the transportation sector
3D-FiberTrain – Large-format rail vehicle components from a 3D printer
Tool-free, recyclable, and ready for series production: This process produces complex components faster and more cost-effectively.
- 100% thermoplastic = fully recyclable
- Lower manufacturing costs for small production runs
- Shorter production times for complex components
Autonomous Driving: Intelligent Systems for Rail Transport
Our projects in the field of autonomous driving demonstrate how rail vehicles can operate safely and reliably without drivers in the future:
SmarTram – Autonomous tram operation in mixed urban traffic
SmarTram develops safe and reliable technology for track-guided vehicles that interact with pedestrians, cyclists, and road traffic.
- Reliable detection of obstacles, signals, and traffic signs
- Automatic braking and precise stopping at designated points
- Successfully tested autonomous operation on depot sections
RailAIxs – Reference architecture for on-board environmental detection
This architecture enables autonomous operation on regional branch lines through AI-supported object detection.
- AI-based object detection and classification
- Integrated sensor system with GNSS, cameras, and LiDAR
- Secure interface for drive and braking systems
Alternative Propulsion Systems: Sustainable Energy for Rail
In the field of alternative propulsion systems, we present forward-looking concepts for climate-friendly mobility:
HyLin-AI – Modular, lightweight car body concept for hydrogen operation
This concept for narrow-gauge railcars demonstrates that autonomous propulsion systems can outperform overhead line electrification.
- AI-supported energy management for optimized real-time operation
- Modular architecture without technological dead ends
- Utilizing fuel cell waste heat for heating in extreme temperatures
RAHD – Revolutionary wheel-integrated hydrogen storage
This patented technology combines hydrogen storage in the wheel with a reluctance drive—for all-day operation without refueling stops.
- 40 kg of H₂ stored in the rear wheels (equivalent to approx. 200 liters of diesel)
- Reluctance motor without rare earth elements – sustainable and robust
- Utilization of previously unused vehicle space
Heat2Comfort – Innovative Climate Control System with Waste Heat Recovery
This innovative HVAC system uses waste heat from the fuel cell as its primary energy source—for quieter, more comfortable, and highly efficient climate control.
- Over 90% of thermal energy requirements covered by waste heat
- 64% reduction in electrical energy consumption for climate control
- Significantly quieter operation (up to a 17 dB(A) reduction in partial-load operation)
